Nice video, but had you used it on a Z camera? I thinking about getting a zoom for my Nikon Z, and the price of the Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6E ED is well within my budget compare to the Z version.

Thank you for this video. You suggested resetting the camera to the factory settings. I have a S5ii. How does one do this? I just bought a used S5ii. It worked fine until I took it to a parade. Then the shutter wouldn’t fire. Pulled the battery out and changed the PASM settings with no joy. Put the camera in C1 and it started working. Then the autofocus wouldn’t focus ~ 30% of the time. I changed the f stops and the auto focus modes without success. This camera has an unbelievable amount of video settings. Most I don’t understand. That is alright as I want to use it for photography. Almost all the how to set up your S5ii videos are about video. Maybe this camera doesn’t do photography. I’m thinking of trading the S5ii for a camera that works. I’ve never had this happen before. Really nice video! Also appreciating your journey into film :) I myself still have the Leica SL2S and various Sony bodies but I wandered through an MP and then Hasselblad 501 towards a Minolta 9, Fuji 690, DaYi 617 and now a Linhof Technika… Photography never gets old but realizing pressing that button will cause a spending makes you really slow down… and walking with a 6x17 pano camera or the 4x5 I need a second tripod - therefore great video!

Too complex, too much adjustments, too many parts to carry and lose. I’ll keep doing what we have been doing for decades: smear petroleum gel on a filter, leaving clear where the sharp part of image will go. Wash filter and repeat ….PRESTO!!

Thank you for doing a side by side comparison of probably the most difficult scenario, a dawn shoot, banding is what I was expecting but did not see that in either which would have been nothing short of miraculous just 10 years ago and still amazes me, I am trying to decide between the two having finally being able to afford a 'Leica' now that the used market is favourable to amateurs like me who care about image quality. Still very difficult to make a decision!

Film definitely slows you down. We get so used to having a camera like an Uzi in the digital world. Tripods are like bags, none are perfect and then you try another and it might be better. I have an older gitzo that is very small though not in the league of your give away.

I still sometimes use three tripods from the days of film: two # 4602 Tiltall Professional tripods Mfd. by C.M. Marchioni, Rutherford NJ. USA; and one # 4602 Tiltall Professional tripod Mfd. by E. Leitz inc. Rockleigh, N.J. USA. I have other tripods, but I like how these were built to last. Slower to use than a ball head, but they are sturdy and precise, well suited for their purpose. But they are not for hiking or traveling light.

Film makes us plan the shoot. Film type, ISO, number of rolls we take for the shoot, how much can we spend on processing and printing etc. Digital is great for flexibility but I see so many taking hundreds of photos for 1 keeper for a static, controlled shot.

the auto focus is the weakest compares to canon and sony, more people use to phone autofocus, so a camera lost to phone autofocus continous is like... you want to explain this to those lazy gen Z? lol u should fired those product development manager nikon. no tap and drag focusing point on the LCD. lazy gen Z use to tap and drag their focusing point. who use joy-stick? OF girls or IG models broh lol. once again nikon seems dont have their eyes set on the future still stuck in DLSR modes. joystick is accurate with... 9? focusing points. with 200+ points and using joystick??? its like playing PS1 or atari and you have to move the stick how many hundreds times, thats really a deal breaker for me. if the camera cant lock on like a robot in A7iii and the user cant help the camera to focus by tap and drag the points like eos R. so the user miss the shot. no sensor shift or high res mode. million of people now taking photo of their products at home and selling it online. what do they need? nikon Z7 ? hahaha just buying em5 mk II, the cheapest product photography camera with high res mode in the world, because nikon just dont need the money. all of this can be solve in software and updates, but too bad nikon afraid their camera sells go up and winning the competions. i think nikon Z are good cameras. but their product planner and management are sucks.

Hey Leigh, I've also been following you for a number of years. I started out in film photography and in my personal opinion, no one should be allowed to call themselves a "photographer'" until they have taken a film black and white photography course, where you have to work in a darkroom, developing your own negatives, mixing the chemicals to produce the photos and develop the film, and all the processes in producing prints. It does cost a ton of money in film photography and I feel like people dont' understand and respect the full concept of photography unless they have actually worked as a darkroom photographer, because exactly like you said, it forces you to slow down and get everything right in camera. There are no "automatic" features. When each click costs you money, it makes it a lot more important and valuable to produce good content. Now, it's like someone can just go buy a camera, throw it in automatic mode, and call themselves a photographer. I started out with an A1, then onto a Minolta, and then a Rebel X, and finally, into the digital world. I did NOT like Nikon at all and I hated the menus. So I went to Canon and got a Canon T2i, then eventually a 60D, then to a 5D Mk IV, and now I'm shooting on a Canon R5. Now, when I do shoot, every single shot has a purpose and that is to sell that image. I'm glad to see that you are shooting film. It's pure bliss isn't it? And if you ever do decide to make your own darkroom, the smell of vinegar will take you back to that darkroom each time because the developer smells like vinegar, or maybe its the stop bath, but either way, I will never trade a day of that time for the world and all the cameras in the world.

I believe I would chose interior soft light and depict you hard at work in an enterprise that highlights your dedication and hard work. Your inner self. No sexism or scabby tats. This may give Raymond a few ideas. If you wish to play real Nikons go with F2, with the 70-210 zoom. That is what I used before you were born. Best wishes.

When you said ASA in your video I went deep diving to see if film had gone back to the old ways of ASA, nope - still ISO. You're showing your age...Lol. And you don't have just one ISO, you can push or pull film. When my wife gave birth oh so many decades ago, I took my camera into the birth room. I obviously didn't want to use flash so I bought ASA 800 and pushed it to 1600, the results were a bit grainy but not too bad.

Hey Leigh, it seems from your recent videos that you are fully recovered from your back surgery (hope that the case). I am a hobbyist photographer and 71 years old. I bought my first real film camera while on my honeymoon (October 1980) in San Francisco. I purchase a Pentax ME super with a 50mm lens. Use this camera for many years. Taking photos of my daughters growing up; vacation and family gathering. Lots of photo albums of priceless memories. Today I own a Nikon Z50 with both kit lenses (great travel camera). I own a [Pro] master professional foldable Tripod ( similar to the foldable Manfrotto you show on this video). Also own a Joby small table top tripod, that supports both my IPhone (obviously) and my Z50. I mainly travel with this tripod, since it very small, but very limited in use. I never take a tripod when I travel (vacation) to Europe, my [pro] master is heavy and bulky. The Manfrotto Element would be prefect for overseas travel’s. You guess it, I will be entering your giveaway.

Film photography no longer makes any sense to me at all. I had it for 25 years and hated waiting for the photos. And afterwards you didn't know why photos were incorrectly exposed because there was no EXIF data. Today it's an esotheric thing of youngsters trying to be hip. If you need the analogue feeling, deactivate the play function, the exposure adjustment of the viewfinder and wait 3 weeks until you look at the photos on your computer or print out the photos after 3, 4 weeks without looking at them before. And then you'll be on the road like an analogue photographer without having to load films.

Thank you for this review. As noted above, in particular, thank you for the even coverage between stills and video. I just purchased the S5ii along with the 50/1.8 and 85/1.8mm lenses. One thing no reviewer has mentioned is the body and the two lenses I purchased are lightweight. A pleasant surprise. I’m setting the camera up right now and there are a ridiculous amount of video options available. I’m primarily a photographer who takes video clips. I won’t use many of the video features due to ignorance. Yes, a major selling point of the S5ii is the PDAF. It is long past due for LUMIX to enter the race. Depth from defocus (DFD) works pretty well for photography. I use M43 bodies and never had any problems with DFD. The focus is relatively slow but more than adequate for my needs. DFD isn’t so good for video. Besides the zooming in and out to obtain focus the DFD wasn’t sticky. Sometimes it’s attention would be captured by the background for no apparently no reason. From my extremely brief use of the PDAF this problem is eliminated. Focus is snappy and sticky. IBIS has always been something LUMIX has been good at. Happily this continues with the S5ii. That is good as my lenses aren’t stabilized so I’m not getting dual lens stabilization. Looks like the IBIS is sufficient. The colors are vibrant and pleasing. I haven't Tried the B&W jpegs yet. The L monochrome D in the G/GX9 is very contrasty and I love it. I don’t know if LUMIX has given me the new Leica Monochrome. This is my first full frame camera. I wonder if I’ll see any difference from M43 images. I’m looking forward to putting the S5ii through its paces this weekend at a parade. I’m hoping this isn’t too much camera for me to handle. Does cropping in the image give you more than 1:1 of macro?
